What's inside a high-altitude balloon experiment?

High altitude balloon payload

This is the payload of a high-altitude balloon experiment carrying an amateur radio APRS station. The box is made up of expanded foam for low weight and insulation. A digital camera (upper right with fingers on it) takes video during the flight, which reaches "near space" before the weather balloon bursts and the payload parachutes to Earth. The APRS station allows for tracking during the flight, so that the chase vehicles can be near the landing site. Note the hot glue that secures wiring to prevent violent flapping and possible failure due to stress during the flight and descent.

The working ham radio operator

Pat talking into microphone; wearing orange hardhat

Hey, ham radio isn't usually dangerous enough to don a construction hat, but just in case...

Visit to HRO San Francisco

Pat at the controls of a really high-end Icom transceiver.

Here I am at HRO during a Radio Camp week several years ago in Cupertino, California. The HRO (Ham Radio Outlet) store was a must-do destination. Here I'm sitting at the controls of a radio that costs as much as some cars. I'm an Icom fan, but I'll have to settle for my more modest IC-7200 and IC-706M2G radios.
